Scholar's Notes: "[This likeness was painted] a year after the Van Buren Presidency ended . . . . [Inman] . . . emphasized the palpable swell of [Angelica's] bosom, the pale flesh of her shoulders, and the powdered ivory oval of her face. . . . Her ebony hair contrasts with the fluff of her pure white headdress; the moiré pattern of her dress is freely drawn; the pale green stole is enlivened with . . . yellow highlights."
