| Scholar's Notes: |
"Although his voyages of 1499 and 1501 were preceded by those of Columbus, only Vespucci (1454-1512) realized that he had 'arrived at a new land which . . . we observed to be a continent.' He was more celebrated than Columbus in the 16th century, yet many more images of Columbus were created. "Nonetheless, there is a consistent tradition for the representation of Vespucci, as there is not for Columbus. As a rule Vespucci was depicted as an older man, mostly bald or wearing a cap, with curly hair on the forward crown and sides of his head. He was shown with a wide mouth; distinctive cords and folds of the neck; a furrowed, sharply-delineated face; and a pronounced jaw muscle beneath his right ear. His head was turned slightly to his left and upward. Ceracchi's sculpture exemplifies this tradition." |
