Scholar's Notes: "The boy in Boy Fishing is nearly schematic. His features are almost completely suppressed, reduced to a triangular patch of face and a circle of hair; the body is equally simplified. . . . The bridge railing together with the boy form the armature of the painting and forever encapsulate the timeless, motionless silence of the hot summer afternoon.

"Robert Richardson [was] Perry's 14-year-old model . . . . He lived in Hancock, New Hampshire, where Lilla and her husband, Thomas Sergeant Perry (a noted scholar of American literature), had their summer home from 1903 on. There Boy Fishing was painted, and there Lilla Cabot Perry died four years later at the age of 85."
